The History of
Khani's Basenjis
|
In 1965, a basenji
by the name of Gigee "RP's Tanganyika Gigee" came into my mom's (Connie |

I was born in 1968, and Basenjis have been a part of my life ever since that day! The first puppy that I showed, later became Am. Ch. Khani's Tuff Stuff, SDHR. Quantity of litters was never a priority at Khani's Basenjis...we have always strived for a quality Basenji that exudes breed type, yet is a great family pet and healthy as can be. Our Number One priority in breeding is TEMPERAMENT. Some folks like to cry *health, health, health*>>> but what good is a healthy dog if it can't be hugged, and cuddled by all family members? |
|
We place an emphasis on health-testing all of our Basenjis... breeding stock and pets alike. We have all of our puppies (NOT just the ones we keep!) eye-tested for all eye anomalies at 7-9 weeks of age. We follow-up with annual eye exams up through age 6 and then bi-annual exams. Due to the onset of PRA, we want to be sure we aren't missing any crucial times in our Basenji's lives, so testing is a MUST MUST MUST! |
|
|
All breeding stock is OFA hip-tested. If one of our Basenjis happens to be under the certifiable age of two years, then we do OFA Pre-Lims>>> and then get the dog certified after reaching two years of age. We are beginning to thyroid test all of our breeding stock as well. We haven't come across any thyroid issues thus far, but find it is always better to be safe than sorry! The foundation of our current dogs are HA Clear, but we are continuing to test (OFA certifications) on the Basenjis we produce. |
|
|
We place the majority of our puppies in *show companion* homes... These are homes that love their Basenji as a family member, yet provide us with the opportunity to bring out the best in that dog... via the dog show ring, agility, obedience, straight-racing, or lure coursing. We feel that these Basenjis have the best of both worlds... They live their lives in the lap of luxury, yet are given every opportunity to excel in many different arenas of sportsmanship. |

|
These days, mom and I co-breed
all of our litters... and on rare occasions we may have a difference
in opinion on which puppy is the best in the litter but with many years of
Basenji-experience and a well-trained eye, we tend to fall for the same |
|
The AKC Basenji
standard calls for gazelle-like grace... this dog *should* combine
strength and elegance and have an aristocratic bearing. A Basenji
that has the above appearance, will be lightly built in stature, and have a
ground-covering and effortless gait, resembling a race horse at full trot. |

A good specimen of the Basenji
breed is a lovely site to see... but to put that Basenji in the most
elegant form...you must dress him in |
